Turkey expands crackdown on illegal gambling beyond its borders

Turkey is preparing to intensify its fight against illegal gambling by expanding enforcement beyond domestic operators and targeting foreign-linked networks serving Turkish consumers. Authorities say the next phase of the government’s anti-gambling action plan will focus on cross-border operations, payment infrastructure, digital platforms and affiliate systems used by offshore operators.

Vice President Cevdet Yılmaz stated that illegal gambling has evolved into a broader security and financial threat linked to money laundering, organised crime and unregulated access for vulnerable users. Turkish authorities estimate the country’s exposure to illegal gambling could range between $20bn and $60bn.

As part of the crackdown, Turkey is increasing pressure on technology platforms, payment systems and social media channels that facilitate access to offshore gambling services. The government also plans to strengthen international cooperation, particularly with jurisdictions that Ankara believes are being used as operational hubs for illegal betting networks targeting Turkey.
